HeyGen has four self-serve plans as of October 2026: Free at $0, Creator at $29 a month for 600 credits, Pro from $49 a month for 1,000 credits up to $4,300 a month for 100,000, and Business at $149 a month for 1,500 credits plus $20 for each extra seat. Yearly billing takes about 17% off Creator and Pro and 20% off Business; Enterprise is priced by contract (heygen.com/pricing). Credits are spent per minute of generated video at a rate set by the avatar engine, so 600 credits is about 150 minutes of Avatar III, 19 minutes of Avatar IV with a video avatar, or 12 minutes of Avatar V (credit rates).
The short version:
- Price your work in minutes per engine, then buy credits. Creator and the Pro tiers cost 4.3 to 5.0 cents a credit on monthly billing, so a bigger tier mostly buys more minutes rather than cheaper ones (plan prices).
- Business is not only for teams. Its included credits are expensive, but its top-ups cost a flat 5 cents (top-up rates). In the gaps above some Pro tiers, one person on Business pays less in a given month: 12,000 credits is $674 on Business against $900 for Pro 20,000 (plan prices).
- Automation does not have to mean the API. The API wallet charges about three times the app's entry-tier rate per avatar minute, assuming plan credits are fully used (app credit rates). HeyGen's MCP connector for AI agents spends your plan credits instead.
- Your account's rate can differ from the published one. HeyGen says credit costs can vary by account creation date and region. Check the cost HeyGen quotes before you render (account rate warning).
Prices and allowances were read signed out from heygen.com/pricing, including every tier in the Pro credit selector, on 20 October 2026. Minutes and dollars per minute below are arithmetic on HeyGen's published rates, before tax, counting generated minutes and assuming you use all of a plan's credits.
How HeyGen credits work, in one example
Three choices decide what a minute costs. The engine is the model that animates the presenter: Avatar III, Avatar IV or Avatar V. The default depends on the workflow. In Video Agent, Avatar V is automatically applied to real human avatars, while virtual or non-human avatars default to Avatar IV. In AI Studio's documented Avatar V creation flow, Avatar V is automatically selected when the chosen avatar already has a video in its looks. The same guide directs photo-based looks to Avatar IV (Avatar V announcement). Check the selected engine before budgeting: a video look costs 31 credits a minute on Avatar IV and 48 on Avatar V (credit rates).
The look type is what the avatar was made from, a single photo or recorded video footage. Stock presenters from HeyGen's library need no slot. An avatar slot holds a custom avatar of a real person, usually you (HeyGen calls it a digital twin); slots are a plan allowance, not a per-video charge.
A 3-minute explainer with your own video avatar on Avatar IV costs 3 × 31 = 93 credits. Render it twice because the first delivery was flat and it is 186. The same script on Avatar III would be 12 credits a take, and on Avatar V 144 (credit rates). HeyGen shows the credit cost before you generate, and that quote is what you are charged. A render that fails or that you cancel midway costs nothing: "you will not be charged any Credits under any circumstances" (video processing times). If you discard a generated video and render again, both generations consume credits.
The plans, as of October 2026

Sources: plan cards, the comparison table and the pricing FAQ on heygen.com/pricing, and HeyGen's credit-based plans article, 20 October 2026. Prices in US dollars before tax; yearly per-month figures are HeyGen's rounded display. The video length is each plan's general limit: the same comparison table caps Avatar IV videos at 30 minutes on every paid plan including Business and Enterprise, HeyGen says Avatar V "supports videos up to 3 minutes long" (Avatar V announcement), and Enterprise translations are capped at five hours (video translation guide).

What separates the tiers beyond credits, from the same comparison table and credit-based plans article:
- Creator removes the watermark and adds 1080p export, a brand kit, voice cloning, unlimited photo avatars and 175+ translation languages. Avatar V is listed with "limited usage", a cap HeyGen does not quantify. Creator cannot buy extra credits; the only way to more is upgrading to Pro.
- Pro adds 4K, faster processing, editing and proofreading of translation scripts, Cinematic Avatars, fuller Avatar V access and the Seedance 2.0 and Veo 3.1 video models inside HeyGen. Every Pro tier has the same features; "only the monthly credit allocation changes" (pricing FAQ).
- Business adds a shared workspace, centralized billing, SAML/SSO, SCORM export and LMS integrations, interactive video, "2x the concurrency of Pro", 60-minute videos, five custom video avatars and credit top-ups. The card also lists n8n, Make, HubSpot and Zapier integrations, but HeyGen's credit FAQ says those run on separately bought API credits on any plan, not on plan credits (how to use credits).
- Enterprise adds SCIM provisioning, multiple workspaces, proofreader seats, a customer success manager and invoice billing.
Avatar slots are a separate purchase. Creator and Pro include one or five custom video avatar slots and Business five or ten, depending on region and when the account was created. Extra slots are $29 a month or $288 a year each, and that price can also vary by account. Adding a Business seat adds a person, not an avatar slot or credits (credit-based plans).
What a credit buys
The rates that decide most bills, from HeyGen's credit rate table, converted into minutes per plan:
| Feature | Credits | Creator, 600 credits | Pro, 1,000 credits | Business, 1,500 credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar III, video look | 4 a minute | 150 min | 250 min | 375 min |
| Avatar III, photo look | 7 a minute | 85 min | 142 min | 214 min |
| Avatar IV, photo look | 16 a minute | 37 min | 62 min | 93 min |
| Avatar IV, video look | 31 a minute | 19 min | 32 min | 48 min |
| Avatar V | 48 a minute | Up to 12 min, but Creator's Avatar V use is limited | 20 min | 31 min |
| Custom Expressive Motion | 40 a minute on top of the avatar rate | Avatar IV video look: 8 min | 14 min | 21 min |
| Video translation, Speed mode | 6 a minute | 100 min | 166 min | 250 min |
| Video translation, Precision mode | 10 a minute | 60 min | 100 min | 150 min |
| Video translation, no lip sync | 4 a minute | 150 min | 250 min | 375 min |
| Video Agent, standard mode | 80 a minute | 7 min | 12 min | 18 min |
| Video Agent, Seedance mode | 240 a minute | Not on Creator | 4 min | 6 min |
Minutes are generated minutes, rounded down. A generated image is 2 credits and video podcast and batch mode 3 a minute (how to use credits). Seedance 2.0 clips, a Pro feature, are listed there at 60 credits at 720p or 150 at 1080p "for any length", and Veo 3 clips at 90; HeyGen's AI video generator guide instead says 4 credits a second at 720p and 10 at 1080p. The two cannot both be right, so read the quote for each clip length before you generate.
The engine choice matters more than the plan. The same 600 credits are 150 minutes of Avatar III or 12 minutes of Avatar V, a factor of twelve. HeyGen's Avatar V announcement says it works only with video-based looks, while both billing guides list an Avatar V photo-look rate, so confirm the engine is offered for your look. HeyGen says it "works best for real human avatars, while Avatar IV works better for virtual characters" (Avatar V announcement). Before committing a month of credits to the newest engine, render the same script on Avatar IV and Avatar V and decide whether the difference is worth 55% more per minute.
Custom Expressive Motion, prompted gestures, is charged on top of the engine: 31 + 40 = 71 credits a minute for an Avatar IV video look, 16 + 40 = 56 for a photo look. HeyGen's own example puts the motion on a 30-second scene at 20 extra credits (how to use credits). Leave it off for scenes where the presenter only talks.
Your account's rate may not be the published rate
HeyGen's credit article warns that "some accounts may see different credit costs or limits for certain features depending on account creation date and region" (how to use credits). It does not say which accounts or by how much. The clearest public case: in September 2026 a user reported being charged 650 credits for about 9 minutes 17 seconds of Avatar V, roughly 70 credits a minute against the published 48, and quoted HeyGen support: "The 70 credits per minute rate for Avatar V is correct for your account. Credit consumption can vary by region, and your account is currently part of a user group where Avatar V is charged at this rate" (r/heygen). That is one account's report, not a second price list, but it changes the arithmetic: 10 minutes of Avatar V video for delivery, budgeted as 12.5 minutes of generated video with a 25% retake margin, is 600 credits at 48 a minute, which fits Creator's allowance if its Avatar V limit allows, and 875 at 70, which needs Pro.
Before choosing a tier, check your own rate:
- Open the editor with the engine and look you will actually use, and write a script of a representative length.
- Note the credit cost HeyGen quotes before generating, and divide by the minutes.
- Generate once and compare the debit on the billing page with the quote.
- Multiply your rate by your monthly minutes and your expected retakes, then pick the tier.
The Pro tiers: more credits at almost the same price per credit
Pro's credit selector hides ten tiers. Read from the pricing page on 20 October 2026:
| Credits a month | Monthly | Cents per credit | Yearly, billed once | Cents per credit, yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 600 (Creator) | $29 | 4.8 | $288 | 4.0 |
| 1,000 | $49 | 4.9 | $488 | 4.1 |
| 1,500 | $74 | 4.9 | $738 | 4.1 |
| 2,000 | $99 | 5.0 | $988 | 4.1 |
| 3,000 | $149 | 5.0 | $1,488 | 4.1 |
| 5,000 | $240 | 4.8 | $2,400 | 4.0 |
| 7,500 | $360 | 4.8 | $3,600 | 4.0 |
| 10,000 | $460 | 4.6 | $4,612 | 3.8 |
| 20,000 | $900 | 4.5 | $9,018 | 3.8 |
| 50,000 | $2,250 | 4.5 | $22,518 | 3.8 |
| 100,000 | $4,300 | 4.3 | $43,030 | 3.6 |
| 1,500 (Business) | $149 | 9.9 | $1,428 | 7.9 |
Source: heygen.com/pricing, Pro credit selector and Business card, 20 October 2026. Cents per credit is price divided by credits.
The volume discount is small. From 1,000 to 100,000 credits the price per credit falls from 4.9 to 4.3 cents, about 12%, which matters at $4,300 a month and barely at all below 3,000 credits, where each step up costs exactly 5 cents per added credit. Choosing a tier is choosing how many minutes you need. Upgrades apply immediately: you pay the price difference and get the extra credits at once (credit-based plans).
Creator and Pro 1,000 cost almost the same per credit (4.8 and 4.9 cents). Moving up is $20 a month for 400 more credits, 4K, translation proofreading, fuller Avatar V access and the Seedance and Veo models, worth it if you run short most months or need one of those features.
When Business is cheaper than Pro, even for one person
Business is $149 a month including 1,500 credits, and it is the only current plan that can buy more credits without a tier change: one-off packs at $5 per 100, with optional auto-reload when the balance runs low (how to use credits). Those top-ups cost half what included Business credits do. Because Pro tiers jump in large steps and top-ups are linear, a one-seat Business plan undercuts the next Pro tier when your need sits just above 3,000, 5,000, 7,500 or 10,000 credits. The monthly cost of Business is $149, plus $20 for each additional seat, plus $5 for each block of 100 credits, rounded up, that you need beyond the 1,500 included.

| Credits you need a month | Cheapest Pro | Business, 1 seat | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3,000 | $149 (Pro 3,000) | $224 | Pro |
| 3,100 (100 min of Avatar IV) | $240 (Pro 5,000) | $229 | Business |
| 5,500 | $360 (Pro 7,500) | $349 | Business |
| 10,000 | $460 (Pro 10,000) | $574 | Pro |
| 12,000 | $900 (Pro 20,000) | $674 | Business |
| More than 16,500, up to 20,000 | $900 (Pro 20,000) | $904 to $1,074 | Pro |
For needs up to 20,000 credits, yearly billing narrows the gaps to 3,001 to 3,100, 5,001 to 5,100 and 10,001 to 14,100 credits: Pro 20,000 yearly works out to $751.50 a month, and Business yearly to $119 plus the same 5-cent top-ups, $644 for 12,000 credits.
This compares fixed monthly purchases with nothing carried over. If you will manage tiers, rollover can beat both: needing 12,000 credits every month, buy Pro 20,000 once ($900, 8,000 left over), then Pro 10,000 ($460) for the next four months while the carried credits run down, an average of $548 a month over five months. HeyGen's credit-based plans article says eligible unused credits roll over for one more cycle after a downgrade to a lower paid monthly plan, and the oldest credits are spent first, so nothing has to survive longer than that. The schedule is arithmetic, not something I ran on an account: set each downgrade for the renewal date and check the carried balance. Business's real advantage is buying in 100-credit blocks without managing tier changes. I could not find in HeyGen's guides whether purchased top-up credits expire, so buy them as you need them.
For a team, the same arithmetic applies to the shared pool: "purchasing additional seats does not increase your credits. The credit pool is shared between all members of the space" (credit-based plans). A five-person team pays $229 a month for the same 1,500 credits a solo Business user gets, about 48 minutes of Avatar IV between them, before top-ups.

API, MCP and integrations: three ways to automate, two meters
The HeyGen API does not draw on plan credits. It is a pay-as-you-go wallet in US dollars that any account, including a free one, can fund, "standalone from our regular HeyGen plans"; free monthly API credits ended in February 2026, and pay-as-you-go balances expire 12 months after purchase (API pricing explained). The heygen.com/api-pricing link on the pricing page redirected to a sign-in screen on 20 October, so the help article is the public price list.
Per minute of output, the API costs more than the same work in the app:
| Job, per minute of output | API, self-serve | App, Creator or Pro 1,000 monthly | App, Pro 1,000 yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar III, digital twin | $0.60 | $0.19 to $0.20 | $0.16 |
| Avatar IV, photo avatar | $2.31 | $0.77 to $0.78 | $0.65 |
| Avatar IV, digital twin | $4.83 | $1.50 to $1.52 | $1.26 |
| Avatar V, digital twin | $7.20 | $2.32 to $2.35 | $1.95 |
| Translation, Speed with lip sync | $0.81 | $0.29 | $0.24 |
| Translation, Precision | $1.50 | $0.48 to $0.49 | $0.41 |
| Translation, audio only | $0.57 | $0.19 to $0.20 | $0.16 |
| Video Agent | $5.82 | $3.87 to $3.92 | $3.25 |
API rates: HeyGen API Pricing Explained, 20 October 2026, charged by actual seconds generated. App figures are the credit rates above times each plan's price per credit (Creator 4.83 cents monthly, Pro 1,000 4.9 cents), assuming every credit gets used. The API article also shows approximate credit equivalents, but they do not convert exactly; calculate in dollars.
For avatar video and translation the API is roughly three times the app's per-minute price; for Video Agent about 1.5 times. That does not make the API wrong for small jobs. With no subscription, 5 minutes of Avatar IV digital twin through the API is $24.15, less than a month of Creator; the break-even is about 6 minutes a month. The API also sells things the app's credit table does not, such as text to speech at $0.12 a minute and avatar creation from $1.32 (API pricing explained).
There are three routes, and which meter they use is what matters:
| Route | Pays with | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Remote MCP, connected to an AI agent such as Claude or Cursor | Your plan credits; "Video generation uses the credits included in your existing HeyGen plan", on every plan | A person asking an agent to make or batch videos |
| HeyGen CLI with OAuth sign-in | Plan credits; the README documents browser OAuth for "Pro / Max subscription users" without saying whether Creator or Business qualify, and says "Unattended agents must use an API key" | Attended scripting from a terminal |
| Direct API key, the CLI with an API key, Zapier, Make, n8n, HubSpot | The API wallet (integrations FAQ) | Unattended pipelines and videos your product generates |
So the question is not "app or API" but which sign-in the job uses. Driving the work through an agent with the MCP connector bills plan credits, about a third of the API's price for avatar minutes at entry-tier rates; HeyGen notes that agents on domains it has not approved must request access first. For software that runs on its own, a personalized-outreach system or videos generated from product data, HeyGen documents API keys, and the API's per-minute prices are the ones to budget.
Interactive avatars are billed on LiveAvatar
Real-time, two-way avatars (the product HeyGen used to call Interactive Avatar) are now LiveAvatar, a separate platform with its own plans. HeyGen plans and avatar slots "do not impact LiveAvatar whatsoever", HeyGen digital twins cannot be streamed there, and LiveAvatar credits are independent of HeyGen API credits (LiveAvatar FAQ). As listed on liveavatar.com on 20 October 2026:
| LiveAvatar plan | Price | Credits a month | Streaming minutes, Full mode | Minutes, Avatar Only | Session cap | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10 | 5 | 10 | 2 minutes, 1 at a time, watermark | None |
| Essential | $99 | 1,100 | 550 | 1,100 | 20 minutes, unlimited concurrency | $0.095 a credit |
| Business | $475 | 6,000 | 3,000 | 6,000 | 60 minutes, unlimited concurrency | $0.09 a credit |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | Down to $0.01 a minute |
Full mode, with HeyGen's own speech recognition, language model and voice, costs 2 credits a minute; Avatar Only mode, where you bring your own, costs 1 (LiveAvatar FAQ). That is about 18 cents a minute in Full mode on Essential and 16 cents on Business. Extra LiveAvatar avatars are $49 a month each (credit-based plans).
What the free plan gives you
The Free plan does not use credits. The pricing page offers "3 videos a month, watermarked", up to a minute each, with Avatar IV and Video Agent access, one custom video avatar and 30+ languages (heygen.com/pricing). HeyGen's help center is less generous: "1 to 3 free videos, depending on your region", a 720p sharing link, three Video Agent videos a month and one voice clone (credit-based plans); its translation guide says Free users can export translated videos at up to 720p (video translation guide).
Use Free to judge Avatar IV on your own face and voice: make the free custom avatar and render a representative script rather than trying a stock presenter. Avatar V is listed from Creator up, so judging it means a month of Creator at least. Anything you need to deliver without a watermark starts on Creator.
Monthly or yearly, rollover, pausing and cancelling
Yearly billing is labelled "2 months free": the totals come to about 17% off twelve monthly payments on Creator and Pro and 20% on Business (heygen.com/pricing). Yearly plans still deliver credits monthly, on the day of the month you bought, but unused credits accumulate until the yearly renewal date. Monthly plans roll unused credits over for one extra billing cycle. Credits closest to expiring are spent first (credit-based plans). Accumulation helps when quiet months come before a busy one, such as saving up for a course launch in month six; it cannot fund a launch in month one, because next month's credits have not arrived yet.
A yearly price is not a yearly rate. The subscription fee is fixed for the term, but credit costs per feature are set in the help center and can vary by account. One annual Pro subscriber reported Avatar III renders costing about 3 credits a minute in mid-August 2026 and about 7 a few days later, with support replying that "we're unable to maintain the previous credit consumption rate for your annual term" (r/heygen). Run the rate check above before paying for a year.
What you lose and when, from HeyGen's cancel or pause article:
- Cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing period; you keep paid features and credits until then, after which unused credits expire and extra custom avatars are locked, not deleted.
- Pausing postpones the next charge by one billing cycle, and "your credit balance expires entirely" when the pause starts. Do not pause with a balance you want to keep.
- Yearly plans are not automatically prorated or refunded for unused months when cancelled.
- Refunds. The cancellation article mentions refunds "within 15 days for web purchases" under HeyGen's refund policy, while the Terms of Service (updated 15 October 2026) say "payments are non-refundable, except where required by law". The two do not state the same conditions; if you need a refund, ask support inside 15 days and cite both.
What changed in 2026
Plan descriptions from before mid-2026 describe a different product. The main changes, from HeyGen's own help articles:
- January 2026: the Team plan ($39 a seat monthly, two-seat minimum) stopped being sold and was replaced by Business (legacy plans).
- 15 May 2026: the "Unlimited" plans were withdrawn. They had unlimited Avatar III video and unlimited dubbing plus a Premium Credit pool for Avatar IV and lip-synced translation: 200 Premium Credits on Creator ($29), and 2,000 on Pro ($99 a month or $948 a year) (legacy plans). The credit-based plans replaced them, with Creator at "3x the monthly credits than before" (how to use credits).
- Legacy subscribers can keep an Unlimited plan while it stays active and in good standing; Avatar III and audio-only dubbing remain unlimited for them, and their Premium Credits now spend at the same per-minute rates as the new plans. Cancelling or switching ends the legacy plan permanently, and for Team plans HeyGen says even a failed renewal payment does (legacy plans).
If you are on a legacy plan, compare like for like before giving it up, because switching is permanent. Legacy Pro is $99 a month for 2,000 Premium Credits plus unlimited Avatar III and dubbing; current Pro 2,000 is the same $99 for the same 2,000 credits with nothing unlimited, and $988 a year against legacy's $948. At around 2,000 credits a month, legacy Pro is the better deal. If you use much less and never touch Avatar III or dubbing, current Pro 1,000 at $49 or Pro 1,500 at $74 costs less; if you need more, price legacy's Premium Credit packs, which current Creator and Pro cannot buy, before switching. Legacy Creator costs the same as the new Creator with a third of the credits (200 against 600) but unlimited Avatar III: switch only if you regularly need more than 200 credits of Avatar IV, Avatar V or lip-synced translation.
Five jobs, priced
Each row prices one month at the published rates with a 25% retake margin, an assumption rather than a measured average, then picks the cheapest fixed tier. Retakes are a major budgeting variable: 20 minutes of Avatar IV video for delivery costs 620 credits without retakes, already over Creator's 600, 775 with a 25% margin, and 1,240 if every video is rendered twice, which moves you from Pro 1,000 to Pro 1,500.
| Job | Credits or minutes, with retakes | Cheapest fit | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| A weekly 5-minute talking-head video with your digital twin on Avatar IV, 20 minutes a month | 20 × 31 × 1.25 = 775 credits, over Creator's 600 | Pro 1,000 | $49, or $40.67 a month yearly |
| The same 20 minutes on Avatar V, as videos of 3 minutes or less | 20 × 48 × 1.25 = 1,200 credits | Pro 1,500 | $74, or $61.50 a month yearly |
| A 10-minute training video translated into 6 languages with lip sync, Precision mode | 60 × 10 × 1.25 = 750 credits | Pro 1,000, which also adds script proofreading | $49 |
| A four-person L&D team: 60 minutes of Avatar IV digital-twin video a month, SCORM export to the LMS | 60 × 31 × 1.25 = 2,325 credits | Business, 1 seat plus 3, with 900 top-up credits | $149 + $60 + $45 = $254 |
| A product sending 300 personalized 1-minute Avatar IV digital-twin videos a month, unattended | 375 minutes of API output | API | $1,811.25 at $4.83 a minute, or $225 on Avatar III at $0.60 |
Sources: credit rates from how to use credits, plan prices from heygen.com/pricing, API rates from API pricing explained, 20 October 2026. The translation row uses Precision, which HeyGen recommends "when quality and lip-sync accuracy are the priority" and for side profiles, occlusions and multiple speakers (video translation guide). For a front-facing single speaker, Speed mode at 6 credits a minute (450 credits) fits the same job on Creator, but Creator cannot proofread the translated script.
If HeyGen's pricing model itself is the problem, the HeyGen alternatives guide compares avatar tools that meter by the minute.
Frequently asked questions
Is HeyGen free? Yes, with limits. The Free plan makes up to three watermarked videos a month, each up to a minute; the help center says the quota is 1 to 3 depending on region and sharing is by a 720p link (credit-based plans).
How much does HeyGen cost per month? As of 20 October 2026: Creator $29 ($24 a month yearly), Pro from $49 ($41 yearly) up to $4,300, and Business $149 ($119 yearly) plus $20 per extra seat (heygen.com/pricing). Every Pro tier has the same features; the monthly credit allowance is what changes (pricing FAQ).
Do HeyGen credits roll over? Yes. On monthly billing unused credits carry over for one more cycle; on yearly billing they accumulate until the yearly renewal (credit-based plans). They expire when a cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period, or when a scheduled pause takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle (cancel or pause).
Can I buy more credits without upgrading? On current plans, only on Business, at $5 per 100 credits with optional auto-reload. Creator users upgrade to Pro and Pro users move to a higher tier, paying the difference and receiving the extra credits immediately (how to use credits).
Can I use my subscription credits through the API? Not with an API key: API usage, and the Zapier, Make, n8n and HubSpot integrations, draw on a separate pay-as-you-go balance that expires after 12 months (API pricing explained). HeyGen's remote MCP connector (MCP overview) and the CLI's OAuth sign-in (CLI README) do spend plan credits.
