Premiere Pro and AI: API, MCP servers and agent limits

AI agents can edit Premiere Pro through community UXP or CEP bridges, XML timeline import, project files and computer control. Premiere needs a paid licence, and each live bridge has its own version, panel and setup requirements.

Best route: Choose a UXP or CEP bridge for structured live editing; XML timelines and closed-project files provide other routes. Premiere needs a paid licence.

Facts checked

Can an AI agent drive Premiere Pro?

MediumAn agent can do real work, with gaps you fill by hand.
No official MCPAPI: yes

An agent can do most structural editing in Premiere through a community bridge: import, bins, sequences, insert and trim, markers, effects, keyframes, captions from subtitle files and Media Encoder exports. It cannot run without the app open, cannot see the picture except through exported frames, and hits gaps Adobe has not filled (speed changes, effect removal, Essential Sound, the generative tools). The move from CEP to UXP also means a bridge that works today may need an update after a Premiere release.

Price: Subscription only: a single-app plan or Creative Cloud Pro; scripting, UXP plugins and CEP panels work on every paid plan at no extra cost, and the generative features draw on monthly credits.

What an AI agent can do in Premiere Pro

15 jobs people ask for, checked against what Premiere Pro’s interfaces expose: 6 fully, 6 in part, 3 not at all.

JobAgent can do it?How, or why not
Assemble a rough cut from clips with in and out pointsYesInsert and overwrite into a new sequence through UXP or ExtendScript; both leading MCP servers expose it.
Import media and organise binsYesProject import and bin operations are in both APIs.
Add markers and chaptersYesMarkers with names, colours and comments can be created and read on sequences and clips.
Apply effects and transitions and set keyframesYesEffects are added and their parameters keyframed through component properties; removing an effect is the gap (below).
Cut from a transcript or remove pausesPartlyUXP's Transcript class (26.3+) and the servers' transcript tools let an agent plan cuts from words; the built-in Paper Edit and silence tools are UI-only.Adobe UXP for Premiere changelog, read
Add captionsPartlyImporting .srt or .vtt captions works; creating a caption from raw text is not exposed.leancoderkavy/premiere-pro-mcp README, read
Change a clip's speed or reverse itNoNeither the ExtendScript nor the UXP API has a setter for a timeline clip's speed or direction.leancoderkavy/premiere-pro-mcp README, read
Colour correct or apply a LUTPartlyLumetri parameters and LUTs can be set through effect properties; judging the result needs an exported frame.
Mix audio levelsPartlyClip and track volume are scriptable; Essential Sound tools such as Enhance Speech and Amplify are not.stefanwebb/premiere-cli README, read
Export a sequence through Media EncoderYesExtendScript encodeSequence and UXP's EncoderManager (26.3+) queue or start exports with a preset.
Hand off a timeline as FCP XML, OTIO, AAF or EDLYesPremiere imports and exports these; UXP added exportAAF in 26.3.
Generate a shot with the Generative Media Tool or Generative ExtendNoWe found no method for either in the UXP API reference or changelog; they run from the UI and spend credits.Adobe UXP for Premiere changelog, read
Add an empty trackPartlyPossible through ExtendScript's undocumented QE DOM; the UXP API has no method for it.CaYatur/PremiereProMCP README, read
Check how the edit looksPartlyAn agent can export a still frame and inspect it; it cannot watch playback, and readback of keyframes or captions proves structure, not pixels.
Render unattended on a serverNoThere is no headless Premiere; Media Encoder watch folders need Media Encoder running on a desktop session.

What AI can’t do in Premiere Pro yet

  • Premiere must be open with a bridge panel loaded: there is no headless mode or command line, so nothing runs on a server or in CI.

Workaround: For batch encoding, use Media Encoder watch folders or the export tools of a bridge in a running copy.

  • No scripting API changes a timeline clip's speed or direction, or removes an effect in Premiere 26.

Workaround: Do those steps by hand, or with window control as a last resort.

    leancoderkavy/premiere-pro-mcp README, read

  • The generative tools (Generative Media Tool, Generative Extend) and Essential Sound are UI-only.

Workaround: Generate outside Premiere through a model API and import the file, or click through the tool in the UI.

  • The agent cannot see the picture through the API; it reads structure (clips, times, parameters), not pixels.

Workaround: Export frames at key points and have the agent inspect them before you review.

  • CEP bridges can break when Premiere updates, and need Adobe's PlayerDebugMode flag, which lets any unsigned CEP panel load.

Workaround: Prefer a server with a UXP path, pin Premiere updates during a project, and save a project version before each agent session.

Adobe CEP to UXP timeline (summary in ayushozha issue #8), read

  • UXP plugins in development load through the UXP Developer Tool, and some bridges must be reloaded after every Premiere restart.

Workaround: Install a packaged .ccx build when the bridge offers one.

  • Undo is partial: a long agent session can make changes you cannot step back through cleanly.

Workaround: Duplicate the sequence or save a numbered project copy first; prefer servers with preview-and-confirm on structural edits.

Premiere Pro MCP shortlist

For installation, verification and troubleshooting, use our Premiere Pro MCP setup guide. The reference below covers the wider app and edition requirements.

  • premiere-pro-mcp (leancoderkavy)

Our pick for most people: the most actively released, with installers for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Claude Desktop and a confirm step before risky edits. Requirements: npm install -g premiere-pro-mcp, then premiere-pro-mcp --install-cep, Premiere 2020 to 2026 open with the CEP connector panel running (Window, Extensions); Node.js 20.19+; an optional UXP panel for 25.6+ adds more tools.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro MCP (hetpatel-11)

The most-starred Premiere server and a solid alternative; it installs the same premiere-pro-mcp command name as leancoderkavy's, so install only one, and its telemetry is on unless you set the env var shown. Requirements: npm install -g adobe-premiere-pro-mcp, then premiere-pro-mcp --install-cep and the MCP Bridge (CEP) panel open in Premiere 2020 or later; Node.js 20+.

  • adb-mcp (Premiere agent)

A proof of concept by an Adobe developer-relations engineer (not endorsed by Adobe) that also covers Photoshop; worth reading as a UXP example, too limited for daily editing. Requirements: The adb-proxy-socket Node proxy running on port 3001 and the Premiere MCP Agent UXP plugin loaded in UXP Developer Tools and connected (reload it after each Premiere restart); Premiere 25.3 or later, Python 3 and uv.

  • AdobePremiereProMCP (ayushozha)

For developers who want task-specific tool profiles and a conservative default; the multi-language build is heavy for everyone else. Requirements: Built from source with Go, Rust, Python, Node.js, just and buf, then just install-panel for the CEP panel in Premiere 2020 or later.

  • PremiereProMCP (CaYatur)

The UXP-first option for Windows users on Premiere 26; small and young, so keep project backups. Requirements: Windows, Premiere 26.0 or later, the Setup.bat installer from the release ZIP, and the plugin loaded once in the UXP Developer Tool.

Voyager Built in

Voyager builds new cuts as Premiere-compatible FCP7 XML timelines and imports them into your open project. For existing sequences it uses computer control or, with the project closed, edits the .prproj file and reopens it. Export, effects, ripple edits and visual review use computer control on macOS or Windows.

Requirements: Install and license Premiere Pro. Grant desktop computer-control permissions for XML import and UI steps. Never edit a .prproj while Premiere has the project open; Linux cannot use this UI workflow. Windows and Linux Voyager builds are alpha; computer control is unavailable on Linux.

Claude desktop app Official app

Does Claude desktop app work with Premiere Pro?

Yes. Adobe for creativity is an official connection for Claude desktop app; its requirements are below. You can also use Adobe Premiere Pro MCP (hetpatel-11), a community MCP server by Het Patel.

Adobe for creativity

Adobe's connector in Claude, launched 28 April 2026, reaches more than 50 cloud tools from Photoshop, Illustrator, Firefly, Express, Premiere and others; its video tools cut and resize uploaded files. It does not touch a timeline in your installed Premiere.

VS Code now recommends the portable mcpServers file, which the Copilot harness reads directly and Copilot CLI shares; .vscode/mcp.json still works but uses "servers" and is labelled deprecated in the Add Server flow. MCP: Add Server in the Command Palette writes the same entry for you. Requires: a GitHub Copilot plan, and on Copilot Business or Enterprise the organization's "MCP servers in Copilot" policy, which is off by default. VS Code with GitHub Copilot docs.

Premiere Pro API, scripting and command line

Premiere Pro API

YesJavaScript (UXP)

The Premiere API is a JavaScript API that runs inside the app through UXP, officially released in Premiere 25.6. It reaches projects, bins, sequences, tracks, clips, markers, effect parameters, transcripts and Media Encoder exports; there is no cloud or REST API for Premiere projects.

javascript
const ppro = require("premierepro");
const project = await ppro.Project.getActiveProject();
const sequence = await project.getActiveSequence();
console.log(sequence.name);

Read the active sequence's name from a UXP plugin. Method calls are asynchronous; property reads are synchronous.

Premiere Pro scripting

PartlyExtendScript (ES3 JavaScript)JavaScript (UXP)

ExtendScript, Adobe's older JavaScript dialect, still runs in Premiere 26.5 through CEP panels and is what most community bridges use. Adobe's scripting guide said ExtendScript integrations would stay supported through September 2026; that date has passed with no removal, and Adobe's CEP transition plan removes CEP from versions released from December 2029. New work should target UXP.

javascript
var seq = app.project.activeSequence;
seq.markers.createMarker(12.5).name = "Chapter 1";

ExtendScript, run from a CEP panel: add a named marker at 12.5 seconds in the active sequence.

Premiere Pro command line and headless mode

No

Premiere has no command line and no headless render mode (After Effects has aerender; Premiere has no equivalent). For unattended encoding, Adobe Media Encoder watch folders encode any file dropped into a folder with a preset, as long as Media Encoder is running. The community premiere-cli gives shell commands that talk to a panel inside a running Premiere.

bash
premiere-cli add-marker --seconds 12.5 --name "Chapter 1"

stefanwebb/premiere-cli, a community tool: about 230 JSON commands sent to its CEP panel in an open copy of Premiere, not a headless renderer.

Premiere Pro plugins and add-ons

YesJavaScript (UXP)HTML and ExtendScript (CEP)C++

Three plugin types: UXP plugins (the current JavaScript route, loaded through the UXP Developer Tool in development and installed as .ccx), CEP panels (HTML and ExtendScript, being retired), and C++ plugins from the Premiere SDK for effects, importers and exporters. Since 26.2 a UXP plugin can also ship native C++ code as a hybrid plugin. Adobe plans to disable CEP by default in December 2028, with user opt-in until removal in December 2029. New CEP submissions stop in December 2027 for Premiere Pro.

PartlyXML (gzip)FCP 7 XMLOpenTimelineIOEDLAAF

A .prproj project is gzip-compressed XML, so an agent can read it, but the schema is undocumented and editing it by hand is a good way to corrupt a project. For writing, use the documented interchange formats Premiere imports: Final Cut Pro 7 XML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL and AAF.

bash

Built-in AI in Premiere Pro

Premiere has a large set of built-in AI tools. Transcription, caption translation, Enhance Speech and media search are included with the plan; generation (Generative Media Tool, Generative Extend) spends generative credits, which are thin on a single-app plan. None of the generative tools are exposed to scripting.

Generative Media Tool

Generates video and sound effects into a timeline range from Firefly or partner models (Veo, Kling, Runway, Luma), with reference frames sampled from your sequence, as editable clips.

Premiere 26.5 (September 2026); premium generative credits, cost shown before you commit; partner models vary by region and plan.

Generative Extend

Extends a clip by up to 2 seconds of video or 10 seconds of audio; the extension is 8-bit, SDR in SDR sequences, and dialogue is muted.

Premium feature charged in generative credits per second of output, by resolution and frame rate.

Speech to Text and captions

Transcribes sequences, generates captions and translates them; Paper Edit (26.5) builds a sequence from selected transcript lines.

Included with the plan, no credits.

Voyager

Use Premiere Pro with Voyager

Voyager builds new cuts as Premiere-compatible FCP7 XML timelines and imports them into your open project. For existing sequences it uses computer control or, with the project closed, edits the .prproj file and reopens it. Export, effects, ripple edits and visual review use computer control on macOS or Windows. The agent can generate supporting media through your connected providers or Voyager credits. App licences and generation costs are separate.

Try asking

  • “Build a 90-second selects sequence from the clips in my Interviews bin and add a marker at each topic change.”
  • “List every clip in the active sequence with its source file and in and out points.”
  • “Cut these six B-roll clips into a 30-second sequence that follows the markers I placed, then save the project.”
  • “Export every sequence in this project as H.264 at 1080p into a Deliverables folder.”

Frequently asked questions

Does Premiere Pro have an API?

Yes. Premiere's API is a JavaScript API that runs inside the app through UXP, officially released in version 25.6, alongside the older ExtendScript API used by CEP panels. Both need Premiere open; there is no cloud or REST API for editing Premiere projects.

Does Premiere Pro scripting cost extra?

No. UXP plugins, ExtendScript and CEP panels work on every paid Premiere plan, single app or Creative Cloud Pro, with no developer fee. The UXP Developer Tool is a free Creative Cloud install.

Is ExtendScript deprecated in Premiere Pro?

It is legacy but still runs. Adobe moved third-party scripting to UXP and said ExtendScript integrations would stay supported through September 2026; ExtendScript panels still load in Premiere 26.5, and Adobe's CEP transition plan removes CEP from versions released from December 2029. Build new tools on UXP.

What is UXP in Premiere Pro?

UXP is Adobe's current plugin platform: modern JavaScript with asynchronous calls that do not block the interface. Premiere's UXP API added Media Encoder exports, subclips, object masks, transcripts and AAF export through 2026, and it still lacks a few things ExtendScript can do, such as adding an empty track.

Can Premiere Pro run headless or from the command line?

No. Premiere has no command line and no headless render mode. The closest options are Adobe Media Encoder watch folders, which encode files dropped into a folder while Media Encoder is running, and community tools such as premiere-cli that send commands to a panel in an open copy of Premiere.

Is there an official Premiere Pro MCP server?

Not for the desktop app. Adobe's hosted Adobe for creativity MCP server includes Premiere-branded video tools that work on uploaded files, but nothing from Adobe reads or edits a project in your installed Premiere. The desktop bridges are community projects.

Can ChatGPT control Premiere Pro?

Not the desktop app. Adobe for ChatGPT can cut, make highlight reels and resize uploaded videos with Premiere tools in the cloud, but it cannot open your project; to edit a real timeline you need a local MCP bridge and a client that runs local servers, such as Codex.

Can Claude edit a Premiere Pro timeline?

Yes, through a community MCP server and its panel inside Premiere. With leancoderkavy's or hetpatel-11's server, Claude Code or Claude Desktop can import media, build and trim sequences, add markers, effects and captions, and export, on the same computer as Premiere.

Can AI edit a video in Premiere Pro for me?

Partly. An agent can assemble a rough cut, place markers, apply effects, import captions and export through Premiere's scripting, but it works from clip data rather than watching the picture, and it cannot change clip speed or use the generative tools. Plan on reviewing and finishing the cut yourself.

Does Premiere Pro have built-in AI?

Yes. Premiere 26.5 includes the Generative Media Tool and Generative Extend (both spend generative credits) plus included tools: Speech to Text, caption translation, Enhance Speech, Media Intelligence search, Object Mask (beta), Auto Reframe and Paper Edit.

How many generative credits come with Premiere Pro?

A Premiere single-app plan started on or after 17 June 2025 includes 25 premium generative credits a month; Creative Cloud Pro includes 4,000 plus unlimited standard generations. Partner models and Generative Extend draw on the premium credits, so a single-app plan runs out quickly.

Can I control Premiere Pro with Python?

Not natively. Premiere scripts in JavaScript; Python reaches it through a bridge, such as a Python MCP server (adb-mcp) or premiere-cli, which talk to a panel inside Premiere. The older pymiere library still exists but its README says it is no longer maintained.

Can an AI agent change clip speed in Premiere Pro?

No. Neither ExtendScript nor the UXP API has a setter for a timeline clip's speed or direction, so speed ramps and reverses stay manual, or need window control.

Can an AI read a Premiere project file?

Yes, for reading. A .prproj file is gzip-compressed XML, so an agent can decompress a copy and inspect it. The format is undocumented, so to create or change timelines, write Final Cut Pro 7 XML or OpenTimelineIO and import it instead.

How much does Premiere Pro cost?

US$22.99 a month for the single app on an annual plan billed monthly, or US$263.88 a year prepaid; Creative Cloud Pro, with After Effects and 20+ other apps, is US$69.99 a month on an annual plan. Month-to-month plans cost more.

Is Premiere Pro free?

The desktop app is not: it needs a subscription after a 7-day trial. Adobe's Premiere app for iPhone is a free download with paid extras, and it has no scripting or MCP access.

Will Premiere Pro MCP servers keep working after Adobe's move to UXP?

CEP-based servers keep working for now, since Adobe's plan keeps CEP in Premiere versions released before December 2029, but individual Premiere updates have broken CEP bridges before. Prefer a server with a maintained UXP path, such as leancoderkavy's or CaYatur's.

Is it safe to let an AI agent run scripts in Premiere Pro?

It carries real risk. Every bridge ends in script execution inside Premiere, and text the model reads (transcripts, clip names, client notes) can carry injected instructions. Save a project copy first, prefer servers that hide raw-script tools or confirm before structural edits, and keep bridges bound to localhost.

Does Premiere Pro work with AI agents on Windows?

Yes. Premiere's scripting runs on macOS and Windows, and leancoderkavy's and hetpatel-11's servers support both, while CaYatur's is tested on Windows. Linux is not an option because Premiere does not run there.

Does Voyager work with Premiere Pro?

Voyager supports this workflow, subject to the app, edition and platform requirements.

How this page is made

Every fact on this page links to the vendor documentation, pricing page, repository or announcement it was read from, with the date it was read. MCP server stars and activity are read from GitHub on the date shown. Setup steps for each AI assistant are generated from that assistant’s documented config format and the server’s own install instructions. Anything we could not verify is marked as unverified rather than guessed. Trademarks belong to their owners; Voyager isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by them.
