Roblox Studio and AI: built-in MCP server, Open Cloud and Luau
AI agents can connect to Roblox Studio’s built-in MCP server to work with an open place. Studio is free on macOS and Windows; the user must sign in and enable the server before a local client can connect.
Best route: Use Studio’s built-in MCP server with Studio open, signed in and the user-enabled switch on.

Ravi Parikh, Co-founder, Voyager
Can an AI agent drive Roblox Studio?
Roblox did the work most vendors leave to the community: an official MCP server inside Studio that reaches scripts, the instance tree, Luau execution, asset search and insert, mesh generation, playtests, simulated input and viewport screenshots. The catch is that it needs Studio open with the place loaded, and publishing, animation authoring and some generators still go through Studio's own windows. For CI and headless jobs, Open Cloud's Luau Execution API and Studio's RunScript command fill most of the gap.
Price: Studio, Assistant, the built-in MCP server and Open Cloud are free; Roblox earns from a share of what players spend, and creators cash out Earned Robux through DevEx or sell plugins and models for US dollars.
Open Cloud is Roblox's REST API, authorised by API keys scoped per API and per game (or OAuth 2.0).
Everything in a Roblox game is scripted in Luau, a gradually typed language derived from Lua 5.1, against the Engine API (Instance, Workspace, services).
The Studio executable takes documented arguments: open a published place or a local .rbxl, open a script at a line, dump the API as JSON, and --task RunScript to run a Luau file in a place and quit.
Studio plugins are Luau scripts with extra permissions (toolbars, widgets, selection, HTTP requests) that run inside the editor.
Roblox ships an MCP server inside Studio.
Places save as binary .rbxl or XML .rbxlx and models as .rbxm/.rbxmx, which community tools (Rojo, Lune) can read and write without Studio.
3 we would consider; we lead with Roblox Studio MCP server (built in).
Studio has the most built-in AI of any engine we cover: an agentic Assistant with planning, skills and playtesting, Code Assist completions, and generators for meshes, procedural models, materials and textures built on Roblox's Cube foundation model.
What an AI agent can do in Roblox Studio
16 jobs people ask for, checked against what Roblox Studio’s interfaces expose: 11 fully, 5 in part, 0 not at all.
| Job | Agent can do it? | How, or why not |
|---|---|---|
| Write, edit and refactor Luau scripts | Yes | The built-in MCP server reads, greps and multi-edits scripts; with Script Sync or Rojo the agent can also edit .luau files directly. |
| Build a level or obby from parts | Yes | execute_luau creates and positions instances with the Engine API, and screen_capture lets the agent check the result. |
| Find and insert Creator Store models, audio and images | Yes | search_asset and insert_asset cover the Creator Store and your own or group inventory, free and paid. |
| Generate a 3D prop from a prompt | Yes | generate_mesh returns a textured MeshPart from Roblox's Cube 3D model; generations are rate limited. |
| Restyle parts with generated materials | Yes | generate_material creates a MaterialVariant the agent can then apply to parts. |
| Texture a specific mesh | Partly | The Texture Generator is a Studio window with no MCP tool, so the agent has to drive the window or you click Generate.Roblox Creator Hub docs: Studio MCP tool list, read |
| Playtest and fix errors from the output | Yes | start_stop_play, get_console_output, character_navigation and simulated keyboard and mouse input let the agent play the game and read errors. |
| Test with several players at once | Partly | The built-in server runs solo playtests; Chrrxs/robloxstudio-mcp adds multiplayer playtests with per-client Luau evaluation. |
| Build and check a ScreenGui for phones and PCs | Yes | UI is instances built in Luau; the rbx-device-simulator skill and screen_capture check it at different screen sizes. |
| Sculpt terrain | Yes | The Terrain API (FillBlock, FillBall, WriteVoxels) is scriptable through execute_luau. |
| Create and publish character animations | Partly | An agent can play existing animation assets from scripts, but authoring and publishing new animations happens in the Animation Editor, and Open Cloud does not upload animation assets.Open Cloud Assets API (supported asset types), read |
| Publish the game | Partly | The MCP server has no publish tool; the Open Cloud place publishing API publishes a saved .rbxl, except for places containing unions, SurfaceAppearance and a few other types that must be published from Studio.Roblox Creator Hub docs: place publishing limitations, read |
| Set up game passes, developer products and badges | Yes | Open Cloud has create and update endpoints for game passes, developer products and badges, and scripts wire them up with MarketplaceService. |
| Run automated tests in CI | Yes | Open Cloud Luau Execution runs a script against a place version on Roblox's servers (up to 5 minutes, 10 concurrent tasks per place); Studio's --task RunScript does the same locally. |
| Keep the project in Git | Partly | Script Sync puts scripts on disk but not parts, models or UI; Rojo can put the whole project on disk, at the cost of a stricter workflow. |
| Upload images, audio, meshes and video as assets | Yes | The Open Cloud Assets API uploads and versions them, and the MCP server's upload_image tool uploads images from URLs; uploads pass Roblox moderation first. |
What AI can’t do in Roblox Studio yet
The built-in MCP server only works while Studio is open with the place loaded; there is no headless editing mode.
Workaround: Use Open Cloud Luau Execution or
RobloxStudio --task RunScriptfor unattended jobs, and Rojo or Lune to build and edit place files without Studio.Studio runs on Windows and macOS only; there is no Linux build, so cloud agents and Linux machines cannot host it.
Workaround: Run Studio on a Mac or Windows machine, or use Wine (Chrrxs/robloxstudio-mcp documents the variables it needs). Open Cloud works from anywhere.
Script Sync only syncs Script, LocalScript, ModuleScript and Folder instances, and it ignores attributes and tags on scripts.
Workaround: Edit everything else through the MCP server, or move the project to Rojo if it all needs to live in files.
An external editor or agent cannot control Studio's debugger.
Workaround: Inside Studio, Assistant's rbx-debug skill sets breakpoints; outside it, bdidk235/RobloxStudioMCP adds breakpoint tools on top of the built-in server.
Generation is capped: procedural models at 50 per rolling 24 hours in Assistant, and in-game mesh generation through GenerationService by a per-minute rate limit.
Workaround: Generate a few hero assets and fill the rest from the Creator Store or your own imported meshes.
Data model changes made in an Open Cloud Luau Execution task are discarded unless the script saves the place, and physics and the place's own scripts do not run in a task.
Workaround: Call AssetService:SavePlaceAsync in the task when you mean to save, and test gameplay in a Studio playtest instead.
Animation authoring, Avatar Auto-Setup and the Texture Generator are Studio windows with no scripting or MCP access.
Workaround: Let the agent operate the window, or do those steps by hand and let the agent script around the results.
Every MCP client you connect can read and change any place open in Studio, and an Open Cloud key can reach every game its owner can unless you restrict it.
Workaround: Connect only clients you trust, scope API keys to one game with IP limits and an expiry, and use a dedicated account for group automation as Roblox recommends.
Roblox Studio MCP servers
An MCP server is the bridge that lets an AI assistant call into Roblox Studio. Roblox ships an MCP server inside Studio. Turn it on in Assistant (the ... menu, Manage MCP Servers, Enable Studio as MCP server), then use quick connect for Antigravity, Codex CLI, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Gemini CLI or VS Code, or add it by hand to any client that runs local stdio servers. Its tools cover scripts, the instance tree, Luau execution, Creator Store search and insert, mesh, material and procedural model generation, playtests, simulated keyboard, mouse and character input, console output and viewport screenshots. The older open-source Roblox/studio-rust-mcp-server was archived on 3 April 2026 in its favour. 2 archived projects are left out.

- Write and update scripts from files
- Run Luau from a file
- Run tests and set breakpoints
- Wait for conditions and watch output
- Tree snapshots and captures
- Manage several Studio instances

Connect Roblox Studio to Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and other assistants
Pick your assistant. Each setup panel leads with Roblox Studio MCP server (built in) and has the config for every other Roblox Studio server underneath.
Voyager Built in
With Studio open and signed in, enable Studio as MCP server in Assistant → … → Manage MCP Servers. Voyager runs `voyager roblox connect` to add and test the integration, then uses the tools exposed by that Studio server to inspect and modify the place; available operations depend on its version. It can also work with Rojo projects and prepare textures, meshes, audio, icons and thumbnails.
Requirements: Install Roblox Studio on macOS or Windows, sign in and enable its MCP server yourself. Rojo needs its plugin connection; generated-asset uploads need your Roblox service key, or you can import them manually. Windows and Linux Voyager builds are alpha; computer control is unavailable on Linux.

ChatGPT Not directly
Does ChatGPT work with Roblox Studio?
Not directly. ChatGPT only connects to remote MCP servers over HTTPS, and Roblox Studio MCP server (built in) runs on your own computer. To use it from ChatGPT you would have to expose it at a public URL through a tunnel or bridge, which also exposes Roblox Studio to the internet.
Roblox publishes no app or connector inside ChatGPT, and Studio's MCP server is a local stdio process, so ChatGPT cannot reach it without a tunnel.

ChatGPT only reaches servers on the public internet over HTTPS. A local stdio server needs OpenAI's Secure MCP Tunnel (the tunnel-client daemon, an OpenAI Platform tunnel and API key), or a public tunnel such as ngrok, so most people use Codex or Claude for local apps. Requires: developer mode (beta) in ChatGPT on the web; OpenAI documents full MCP, including write actions, for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, where an admin must allow it. ChatGPT docs.

Roblox Studio API, scripting and command line
Roblox Studio API
YesRESTAPI keysOAuth 2.0Any language that speaks HTTPSOpen Cloud is Roblox's REST API, authorised by API keys scoped per API and per game (or OAuth 2.0). It publishes whole place files, uploads and versions assets (audio, decals, images, models, meshes, video), creates game passes, developer products and badges, reads and writes data stores, and runs Luau headlessly against a place. It cannot reach a Studio session or edit individual objects in a place except through a Luau Execution task.
Cost: Free; rate limited per endpoint.
curl -X POST "https://apis.roblox.com/universes/v1/$UNIVERSE_ID/places/$PLACE_ID/versions?versionType=Published" \
-H "x-api-key: $ROBLOX_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/octet-stream" \
--data-binary @MyGame.rbxlPublish a local .rbxl as the new live version of a place (the key needs the universe-places write permission).

Roblox Studio scripting
YesLua (Luau)Everything in a Roblox game is scripted in Luau, a gradually typed language derived from Lua 5.1, against the Engine API (Instance, Workspace, services). The same Luau runs in game scripts, in the Studio command bar, in plugins and in MCP execute_luau calls, so an agent that writes Luau can do almost anything a person can do in the Explorer. There is no Python inside Studio.
local part = Instance.new("Part")

Roblox Studio command line and headless mode
PartlyShellThe Studio executable takes documented arguments: open a published place or a local .rbxl, open a script at a line, dump the API as JSON, and --task RunScript to run a Luau file in a place and quit. It still starts the Studio application (there is no true headless editor); for headless runs on Roblox's servers, use Open Cloud's Luau Execution API (5 minutes per task, 10 concurrent tasks per place).
/Applications/RobloxStudio.app/Contents/MacOS/RobloxStudio --task RunScript \
--localPlaceFile "$PWD/MyGame.rbxl" --runScriptFile "$PWD/smokeTest.luau" \
--outputFile out.log --quitAfterExecutionRun a Luau smoke test against a local place file and exit (macOS path; on Windows the executable is RobloxStudioBeta.exe under %localappdata%\Roblox\Versions).

Roblox Studio plugins and add-ons
YesLua (Luau)Studio plugins are Luau scripts with extra permissions (toolbars, widgets, selection, HTTP requests) that run inside the editor. They are how Rojo, the Luau language server companion and most community MCP bridges reach Studio. You install them from the Creator Store, and you can give them away or sell them for US dollars.

Roblox Studio official MCP server
YesMCP (stdio)Roblox ships an MCP server inside Studio.

Voyager
Use Roblox Studio with Voyager
With Studio open and signed in, enable Studio as MCP server in Assistant → … → Manage MCP Servers. Voyager runs `voyager roblox connect` to add and test the integration, then uses the tools exposed by that Studio server to inspect and modify the place; available operations depend on its version. It can also work with Rojo projects and prepare textures, meshes, audio, icons and thumbnails. The agent can generate supporting media through your connected providers or Voyager credits. App licences and generation costs are separate.

Frequently asked questions
Does Roblox Studio have built-in AI?
Yes. Studio includes Assistant, an agentic chat panel that writes scripts, edits objects, inserts Creator Store assets, generates meshes and materials and playtests, plus Code Assist completions in the Script Editor and Material and Texture Generators. Roblox lists no price for any of it.
Is there an official Roblox Studio MCP server?
Yes, and it is built into Studio. Open Assistant, choose Manage MCP Servers and turn on Enable Studio as MCP server; Studio then offers quick connect for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex CLI, Cursor, Gemini CLI, VS Code and Antigravity, and any client that runs local stdio servers can use it by hand.
What happened to Roblox/studio-rust-mcp-server?
Roblox archived it on 3 April 2026 and recommends the MCP server built into Studio instead. The code and old releases stay on GitHub, but it gets no new tools, so guides that tell you to download rbx-studio-mcp are out of date.
What can the Roblox Studio MCP server do?
It can read, search and edit scripts, explore and inspect the instance tree, run Luau in Edit, Client or Server, search and insert Creator Store assets, generate meshes, materials and procedural models, start playtests, simulate keyboard, mouse and character input, read the output log and capture the viewport. It cannot publish the game or open the Animation Editor or Texture Generator.
Does Roblox have an API?
Roblox has two: the Engine API, which Luau scripts and plugins use inside games and Studio, and Open Cloud, a REST API for working with your games from outside. Open Cloud uses API keys or OAuth 2.0 and covers place publishing, assets, data stores, game passes, developer products, badges and headless Luau execution.
Can an Open Cloud API key edit my Roblox place?
Only indirectly. A key can publish a whole new .rbxl or .rbxlx file as a place version, or run a Luau Execution task that changes the place and saves it with AssetService:SavePlaceAsync; it cannot reach a Studio session or edit single objects any other way.
What programming language does Roblox Studio use?
Roblox Studio uses Luau, a fast, gradually typed language derived from Lua 5.1 and open-sourced by Roblox. Game scripts, plugins, the command bar and the MCP server's execute_luau tool all run Luau.
Can I use Python with Roblox Studio?
Not inside Studio: games and plugins run only Luau. Python can call Open Cloud's REST endpoints from outside, and some community MCP servers are written in Python, but the code they send into Studio is still Luau.
Can Roblox Studio run from the command line or headless?
Partly. The Studio executable accepts documented arguments to open places and scripts, dump the API and run a Luau file with --task RunScript --quitAfterExecution, but it still launches the Studio app; for truly headless runs on Roblox's servers, use Open Cloud's Luau Execution API.
Can ChatGPT control Roblox Studio?
Not the ChatGPT chat app, which only connects to remote MCP servers while Studio's server runs locally, and Roblox publishes no ChatGPT app. OpenAI's Codex CLI does work: it is on Studio's quick connect list.
Can AI make a whole Roblox game?
It can make a small, working one. Through the MCP server or Assistant, an agent can script game loops, build levels from parts and generated meshes, add UI and playtest; larger games still need a person for design, art direction, animation and publishing decisions. Roblox's separate Build tool makes simple 2D and 2.5D games from prompts on mobile.
What are Cube 3D and 4D generation on Roblox?
Cube 3D is Roblox's foundation model for generating 3D objects from text; it powers mesh generation in Assistant and GenerationService in games, and its weights are open on GitHub and Hugging Face. 4D generation is Roblox's name for schema-driven generation of functional, multi-part objects, such as a drivable car, which entered public beta in February 2026.
Is Roblox Studio free?
Yes. Roblox Studio is a free download for Windows and macOS, with no paid tier, seat licence or royalty; Roblox earns from its share of what players spend in games. Assistant, the MCP server and the Open Cloud API are free too.
Can I use my own Claude or GPT model in Roblox Assistant?
Yes. In Assistant, open Manage API Keys, enter an Anthropic, OpenAI or Google Gemini API key and pick the model from the Model menu; you then pay that provider for usage.
How do Roblox creators make money, and what is the DevEx rate?
Creators earn Robux from game passes, developer products, subscriptions, private servers, Creator Rewards and Creator Store sales, then cash out Earned Robux through the Developer Exchange (DevEx). The standard rate is $0.0038 per Earned Robux ($114 for 30,000), with $0.0054 for eligible purchases by age-verified US adults, and the minimum cash-out is 30,000 Earned Robux.
Can I sell Roblox Studio plugins?
Yes. With a Stripe seller account you can sell plugins on the Creator Store for $4.99 to $249.99 and models for $2.99 to $49.99, paid in US dollars, and you keep 100% of net proceeds after taxes and payment fees.
Do I still need Rojo now that Studio has Script Sync?
Only if you want the whole project in files. Script Sync, built into Studio, mirrors scripts and folders to .luau files and works with Team Create; Rojo makes the file system the source of truth for every instance and suits Git-based teams, and version 7.7 added syncback to convert an existing place.
Can an AI agent see my Roblox game?
Yes. The MCP server's screen_capture tool returns an image of the Studio viewport in Edit or Play, from the current camera or a camera position the agent chooses, so a model with vision can check layouts, lighting and UI.
Is it safe to connect an AI client to Roblox Studio?
It is as safe as the client you connect: any MCP client can read and modify every place open in Studio, and Roblox warns you to connect only clients you trust. Keep Open Cloud keys scoped to one game, restricted by IP and set to expire.
Does Roblox Studio run on Linux, Chromebook or iPad?
No. Roblox Studio is available for Windows and macOS only. Linux users run it under Wine, which Roblox does not support.
Does Voyager work with Roblox Studio?
Voyager supports this workflow, subject to the app, edition and platform requirements. With Studio open and signed in, enable Studio as MCP server in Assistant → … → Manage MCP Servers. Voyager runs voyager roblox connect to add and test the integration, then uses the tools exposed by that Studio server to inspect and modify the place; available operations depend on its version.
