Voyager vs Codex
You don’t choose between them. Voyager runs Codex as its agent on your existing ChatGPT plan, at no charge from Voyager, and gives it what Codex lacks for media work: video, voice and music models beside its own image generation, control of Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Blender and more, and Voyager’s own design, video and music editors.
Add Voyager when
- The job needs video, voice or music, or image models beyond GPT Image.
- The work has to land in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Resolve, Blender or Ableton Live as an editable project.
- You want Codex to cut, score and finish a piece, with previews beside the conversation.
Codex alone is enough when
- The work is code, scripts, automation or writing.
- A GPT Image still, a UI asset or a sprite sheet is the deliverable.
- A plugin for one app, such as Canva or Figma, covers the whole job.

What each one is
An agent, and the creative harness around it.
What is Voyager?
Voyager is a desktop agent harness for creative work, for macOS with Windows and Linux in alpha. It runs Codex, Claude Code or its own agent, and gives that agent cloud image, video, voice and music models, skills for the creative apps on your computer, Voyager’s own Design, Video and DAW editors, and previews of the work beside the conversation.
What is Codex?
Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent, included in every ChatGPT plan: in the ChatGPT desktop app, an open-source CLI, an IDE extension and the cloud. It reads and writes code, runs commands in a sandbox, takes plugins, skills and MCP servers, generates images with gpt-image-2, and in the desktop app can operate other apps on screen.

Media models
Codex has an image model. Voyager adds the rest.
Codex can generate images: gpt-image-2 is built in, pitched for UI assets, banners, illustrations and sprite sheets, and it draws on your Codex usage limits faster than a normal turn. Past stills, Codex has no media model of its own. OpenAI closed the Sora app in April 2026, and no speech or music generation is documented.
Inside Voyager, Codex gets those as tools. It can call Veo 3.1, Seedance, Kling, Nano Banana, FLUX.2, ElevenLabs and dozens more, each at a published rate, 1 credit for 1¢ of what the provider charges, with no keys to collect. Or bring your own fal, Google, ElevenLabs or Higgsfield keys and pay those providers directly.
On Codex
On its own, Codex can reach generators through plugins such as Runway’s and Higgsfield’s, listed in ChatGPT’s plugin directory, each billed on its own account. (ChatGPT plugins, read )
Your apps
Skills for the apps creative work happens in.
Codex reaches desktop software through MCP servers you configure, plugins, scripts it runs in the shell, and, in the desktop app, operating the screen. Each works, and each is one more thing to find, install and trust. Our guides cover the MCP route app by app, from Photoshop and Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve and Ableton Live.
Voyager ships the skills instead. Codex gets Photoshop scripting, a local bridge for Premiere Pro, Resolve’s scripting API and the rest, so it builds layers, cuts timelines and lays out scenes in the real app, with your licences, and the files stay ordinary projects.
Without those apps, Voyager’s own Design, Video and DAW editors come with it, free, and export PSD, SVG, Lottie, OTIO, FCPXML, stems and MIDI.
Photoshop
Illustrator
After Effects
Premiere Pro
DaVinci Resolve
Final Cut ProBlender
Unity
Ableton Live
- + many more
Voyager Design
Vector, raster and paint layers, layout, decks with PPTX, and motion graphics with keyframes. Exports PNG, SVG, PDF, PSD, Lottie and ProRes 4444 with alpha.
Voyager Video
Timeline, multicam, colour and keys. Hands off to Resolve and Premiere as OTIO, FCPXML or EDL, and delivers H.264, HEVC, ProRes and DNxHR.
Voyager DAW
Arranging, instruments, VST3 plug-ins, mixing and mastering to loudness targets, stems and MIDI export, and scoring to picture: cues from a video’s cuts and ducking under voice-over.
You bring your own licences. Live control of the Adobe apps runs on macOS today. Voyager DAW does most of what you would do in Ableton Live or Logic Pro, from arranging and recording to mixing and mastering, and the rest is on the way. It doesn’t have sampled orchestral instruments yet. Trademarks belong to their owners; Voyager isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by them.
On Codex
ChatGPT’s Adobe plugin runs Adobe’s cloud tools, photo edits, Express templates and video reformatting, inside the conversation; it does not operate the Photoshop desktop app. (ChatGPT plugins, read )
Finished work
Codex, finishing a piece.
Inside Voyager, Codex doesn’t stop at a file. It lays generated shots on a timeline in Premiere Pro, Resolve or Voyager Video, writes and mixes a score in Voyager DAW or Ableton Live, and builds titles and motion graphics in After Effects or Voyager Design. Each step shows in a preview beside the conversation, so you can redirect it as it works, and what is left is a project you can open and change, not a flat file.
Cost
Your ChatGPT plan, plus models at cost.
How Voyager charges
Running Codex in Voyager costs nothing from Voyager. Its usage counts against your ChatGPT plan’s Codex limits, as it would anywhere else.
Media generation is 1 credit for 1¢ of what the model’s provider charges, with no markup and every rate published. With your own model keys, the app is free.
The Voyager plugin brings the same skills and command-line tools into Codex without the Voyager window.
How Codex charges
Codex is in every ChatGPT plan. Plus, $20 a month, covers the app, CLI, IDE and phone; Free and Go get the desktop app as it rolls out. (Codex pricing, read )
Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month, with no five-hour limit. Business is $25 a seat, or $20 billed annually. (Codex pricing, read )
Image generation counts against the same Codex limits, about three to five times faster than a normal turn. (Image generation in Codex, read )
Every Voyager rate is on the pricing page.
Codex on its own
When Codex alone is enough.
Code, scripts and automation
Software, build scripts, ffmpeg pipelines and scheduled jobs need nothing Voyager adds, and Codex’s non-interactive mode runs it from scripts and CI. (Non-interactive mode, read ; Codex for almost everything, read )
Stills for a build
UI assets, banners, illustrations and sprite sheets from gpt-image-2, right beside the code that uses them. (Image generation in Codex, read )
Code-based motion
A Remotion plugin was among the plugins OpenAI launched for Codex, for video made as code. (Codex for almost everything, read )
Open source and everywhere
The Codex CLI is open source under Apache-2.0, and Codex runs in the desktop app, terminal, editor and cloud, with tasks steered from a phone. (openai/codex, read ; Codex docs, read )

How we checked
Codex’s plans and features were read on 8 October 2026 from OpenAI’s Codex docs at learn.chatgpt.com, its help centre, chatgpt.com and openai.com, signed out, in the US. Each Codex claim links its source. Voyager’s facts come from its published rates and the desktop app, where Codex runs as the agent on the user’s own sign-in. Where we say Codex does not do something, OpenAI says so or does not document it.
Can I use my ChatGPT subscription in Voyager?
Yes. Connect Codex in Voyager’s settings with your ChatGPT sign-in and it runs on its official runtime. Voyager never bills your ChatGPT plan, and usage counts against your plan’s own Codex limits.
Do I need Voyager if I already have Codex?
Not for code, scripts, automation or a GPT Image still. You need it, or something like it, when the work calls for video, voice, music or other image models, or has to be built in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Resolve, Blender or a DAW as an editable project.
Can Codex generate images or video?
Images, yes: Codex has built-in generation with gpt-image-2 on paid plans. Video, no: Codex has no video model, and OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in April 2026. Inside Voyager, Codex can call Veo 3.1, Seedance, Kling and other video models. (Image generation in Codex, read ; Sora discontinuation, read )
Can Codex use Photoshop or Premiere Pro?
Through MCP servers, plugins or screen control in the desktop app, in part. ChatGPT’s Adobe plugin runs Adobe’s cloud tools rather than the desktop apps. Voyager gives Codex skills for Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Resolve, Blender and more. (MCP in Codex, read ; ChatGPT plugins, read ; Computer use, read )
Can I use Voyager from inside Codex?
Yes. Install the Voyager plugin and the same creative skills and command-line tools work in Codex. Generation and editing run without the Voyager window; screen recording and computer control use the Voyager desktop app on a Mac. (Codex plugins, read )
Which ChatGPT plan do I need for Codex?
Codex is in every ChatGPT plan. Plus, at $20 a month, opens the CLI, IDE extension and phone as well as the desktop app; Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month for more usage. Voyager adds no charge for using it. (Codex pricing, read )
Is Voyager made by OpenAI?
No. Voyager is made by Nullframe and is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI. It runs Codex through OpenAI’s official runtime on your own account.
